Video can make a website look incredible, but it can also become one of the largest files a visitor has to download.
This becomes especially important when you’re using autoplaying hero videos, background videos, animated graphics, event footage, or other video-heavy website elements.
A video that looks great on your computer may be unnecessarily large for a website, particularly when many of your visitors are viewing it on a phone or tablet.
The good news is that you can often dramatically reduce a website video’s file size without creating a noticeable difference in quality.
In this tutorial, we’ll look at a simple way to optimize video for websites by adjusting the target bitrate during export in Adobe Premiere.
Why Video File Size Matters for Website Performance
Every time someone loads a video directly from your website, their browser needs to download that video data from somewhere.
The larger the file, the more data needs to be transferred.
That can affect:
- Website loading speed.
- Mobile performance.
- Hosting bandwidth usage.
- Server resources.
- The experience for visitors on slower connections.
A few megabytes may not seem significant when you’re looking at a single page load.
Multiply that by hundreds or thousands of visitors, however, and the difference between a 4 MB video and a 20 MB, 50 MB, or 100+ MB video can become substantial.
Autoplay Website Videos Can Use a Lot of Bandwidth
This becomes particularly important with videos that automatically play when someone lands on a page.
In the real-world example discussed in this tutorial, one of our clients runs a major New Year’s Eve event in Miami.
The website uses an autoplaying homepage video to help create the visual experience of the event.
As New Year’s Eve approaches, website traffic increases significantly. That means potentially thousands of visitors loading the homepage video.
If that video is unnecessarily large, every one of those visits can consume more bandwidth than necessary.
And many of those visitors are viewing the website on a phone anyway.
They don’t necessarily need an enormous, ultra-high-bitrate video file to get the intended visual experience.
Don’t Upload the Original Video File Without Optimizing It
One of the easiest mistakes to make is taking the original video file and uploading it directly to the website.
A video editor, client, photographer, videographer, or marketing team may provide you with a beautiful high-quality video file.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the file is optimized for web delivery.
A file designed for editing, archiving, large displays, or high-quality playback can contain far more data than you need for a website background or hero section.
As web designers and developers, optimizing the assets we’re given is part of building a fast website.
How to Optimize a Video for Your Website in Adobe Premiere
The process is relatively simple. Instead of changing the content, animation, or dimensions of the video, we’re primarily going to focus on how much video data is being encoded into the exported file.
- Open the video in Adobe Premiere. Once your video is ready for the website, open the export settings.
- Check the estimated file size. Before changing anything, look at the estimated file size shown in the export settings. This gives you a baseline for comparison. In our example, the default settings produced an estimated file size of approximately 18 MB.
- Find the target bitrate setting. Bitrate determines how much data is used to encode the video over a given period of time. A higher bitrate generally produces a larger file, while a lower bitrate uses less data and produces a smaller file.
- Reduce the target bitrate. In our example, the original target bitrate was approximately 14.7 Mbps. For this relatively simple animated website graphic, that was much higher than necessary.
- Watch the estimated file size change. Reducing the target bitrate to approximately 3 Mbps dropped the estimated file size from approximately 18 MB to 4 MB.
- Export and review the optimized video. Make sure the smaller version still looks good at the size and in the location where it will actually appear on the website. If the quality is noticeably reduced, increase the bitrate slightly and export again.
In this example, one export setting reduced the estimated video file size by roughly 78%. For a website serving that video repeatedly to hundreds or thousands of visitors, that difference can become significant.
How Much Should You Reduce a Website Video’s Bitrate?
There isn’t one perfect bitrate for every website video.
The correct setting depends on the video itself and how it will be used.
Simple Animations and Background Graphics
For a relatively simple animated graphic like the example in this tutorial, a target bitrate around 3 Mbps may provide enough quality while keeping the file considerably smaller.
These types of videos often don’t contain the visual complexity of detailed cinematic footage, which can make them easier to compress.
Website Videos Where Image Quality Is More Important
For videos with more detail or situations where image quality is more important, you may want to use a higher target bitrate.
Depending on the video, something closer to 4–5 Mbps may provide a better balance between visual quality and file size.
The important thing is not blindly using the same bitrate for every video.
Look at the content, consider where it will appear, and test the exported result.
Optimize the Video for How It Will Actually Be Viewed
Context matters when optimizing videos for websites.
A video displayed full-screen on a massive television has different requirements than a background video behind website text.
A small animated section halfway down a webpage may need even less detail.
Before choosing your export settings, ask:
- Will the video be full-screen?
- Is it a background video?
- Will text or other elements appear over it?
- Is the video primarily decorative?
- How much motion and detail does the video contain?
- How many visitors will view it on mobile devices?
Optimize the video for the experience you’re actually delivering instead of automatically exporting everything at maximum quality.
Mobile Visitors (Most Visitors) Don’t Need Massive Video Files
Mobile traffic is another reason to pay attention to website video optimization.
A large portion of website traffic may come from phones where the physical display is much smaller than a desktop monitor.
Serving an enormous video file doesn’t automatically create a better mobile experience.
In some situations, it can create the opposite.
A visitor may have to download substantially more data while receiving little or no noticeable improvement in visual quality.
How Much Bandwidth Can Video Optimization Save?
The difference becomes clearer when you think beyond a single visitor.
Using our example:
- Original estimated video size: 18 MB
- Optimized estimated video size: 4 MB
- Approximate savings per full video load: 14 MB
If 1,000 visitors each load the full video, that difference represents approximately:
14,000 MB — or about 14 GB — of reduced data transfer.
At 10,000 full video loads, the theoretical difference becomes approximately:
140 GB.
Actual bandwidth usage can vary depending on caching, delivery methods, visitor behavior, and how much of the video is downloaded, but the example illustrates why file optimization matters at scale.
Don’t Sacrifice Video Quality Just to Get the Smallest File
The goal isn’t to compress a video until it looks terrible.
The goal is to find the point where additional file size stops creating a meaningful improvement for the visitor.
If reducing a video from 18 MB to 4 MB still gives you the quality you need, that’s a useful optimization.
If reducing another video to 4 MB makes it visibly poor, use a larger file.
Website optimization is about balancing:
- Visual quality.
- File size.
- Loading performance.
- Bandwidth.
- The purpose of the video.
- The devices your visitors are using.
Final Thoughts: Optimize Website Videos Before You Upload Them
Video can be one of the most visually powerful elements on a website, but it can also become one of the heaviest.
Don’t assume the original file or default export settings are appropriate for the web.
Before uploading a video, look at how it will actually be used, check its file size, and experiment with the target bitrate.
A few minutes spent optimizing a video before uploading it can potentially save a substantial amount of bandwidth across thousands of page views while giving visitors essentially the same visual experience.
The goal isn’t maximum compression or maximum quality.
It’s delivering the quality the website needs without forcing every visitor to download data they don’t need.
